The Other Guy…LinkedIn

Most businesses see the value and necessity in having a Facebook and Twitter page but they forget that there are other platforms that can also bring ROI, get them in front of their customers and create brand awareness. It is with that, that I introduce LinkedIn; a platform with over 200 million users. When it comes to growing and promoting a business, what makes this platform completely different than any other is that people are strictly here for their business and to connect with thought leaders and industry experts.

LinkedIn is the professional networking group on social media.  Why is it so important? Today, it is the place for recruits to find employees, for professional networking to take place and to advertise your business.

1. Company Pages

Company pages are a great way to advertise your business’s updates and have a professional presence on social media. Company pages allow you to share company news and through LinkedIn analytics, see who is interested and visiting your page.

Looking to connect with others in your industry? Join a professional group! There is one for every interest. This is one of the best ways to network. Start a discussion in a group and contribute as much as you can. “How do I do this”, you ask? Post a question or interesting article and watch as others comment and get engaged. Through this practice, you will be identified as a thought leader and expert in your field.

3. Advertising

If you’re looking to advertise to your audience, LinkedIn may be the platform you want to use. Why? Being relatively new with offering ads, you and your company will be competing less with other advertisers on this platform.  Furthermore, companies have the capability to advertise thanks to highly targeted capabilities offered on LinkedIn. Target the right audiences that will make you money by tailoring your add by: salary, interests, job functions, industries, company size, demographics and geography.

4. Professional Networking

The number one reason for you and/or your business to be on LinkedIn is for the incredible professional networking and recruiting capabilities. Unlike Facebook, LinkedIn is strictly professional.

My Heart, My Life, My Lessons

 

Heart

Upon nearing the first year following my heart attack, I’d like to describe—from that moment on—how it has affected my life’s perspective.

Prior to sharing such, however, words cannot begin to express the gratitude I have for my co-worker, Brittany Doyle, who dialed 911 and insisted upon my transport the hospital, whereupon, a couple of arterial stints later, I survived.

Such said, below are the post-heart attack life’s guidelines I try to abide by everyday:

1. Plan for Tomorrow, Live for Now

As Jason Mraz famously sang in his catchy tune, ‘Living in the Moment’, so true lies this No.1 lesson. While it’s prudent to set future goals and work toward their achievement, it’s equally important to be attuned to the moment and seek those joys manifest therein.

2. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Daily living always spouts forth a series of challenges. Most of which are inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Recognize those that are irrelevant, and allow them to roll off you like water over a duck’s back. Concentrate on those issues that are TRULY important.

3. Set Aside “Me” Time

Life can often appear to be an unending, hectic affair. Abate personal stress by setting aside a bit of time each day to lower the blood pressure in doing whatever makes you feel totally relaxed and blissful. For some this might mean using your lunch break to go for a park side run, flip tires, attending an evening drawing class or practicing the art of slowing down your breath in a yoga class.

4. Cherish Friends and Loved Ones

Regularly let friends know how much you care for them. To those you deeply love, demonstrate it in all ways possible, without any restraint, whatsoever. All will be returned, manifold. Trust me.

5. Eat Well

Maintain a diet comprised of healthy food intake. The old saying of “you are what you eat” rings true. For some healthy recipes, check out our Pinterest board!

6. Maintain a Sense of Humor

Forget the apple! Laughter in the day keeps the doctor away! Laughter releases endorphins that not only extend general wellness and life expectancy, but also makes living whole. Chuckle at jokes about life’s general conditions, belly laugh when it comes to self-deprecation, though (rule of thumb), never crack a smile when slights are directed at the expense of individuals.

 

The above “My NEW Life” guidelines have helped to mend my heart, mind, and soul.

Why You Need A Strong Online Presence…And How To Craft One.

  • Make sure your website is up to date and user friendly. According to the Nielsen Norman Group, most users leave sites within 59 seconds. That means you have to capture their attention immediately with high quality, relevant content.
  1. Get social
  • Are you on social media? Because your clients probably are. According to the Pew Internet Project’s research (http://www.pewinternet.org/fact-sheets/social-networking-fact-sheet/), 74% of online adults use social networking sites.
  1. Be consistent
  • Pick a voice for your brand’s online presence, and then stick with it. When choosing how you want to represent your company online, make sure it adheres to your brand standards and company image.

You May Think You Know Facebook, But You Have No Idea.

One of the many things we hear when training companies on social media strategy is “I know how to run Facebook, so I’m not sure how much more you can teach me.” We never doubt the person saying this doesn’t know Facebook. Everyone knows Facebook. The issue lies in the difference of running a personal Facebook page versus a business page.

 

Here are 5 things you may not know about Facebook business pages:

  1. Insights. A business page allows the admins to access all kinds of data. From geo-targeted results from LIKES to how many users not only engaged with your post, but also blindly engaged (a click through that can only be seen by someone managing the page). Without analytics, how do you know if your strategy is working?
  2. Promoted Posts. You may hate this part. No one wants to pay Facebook to get the word out. But there is no denying; this is how it has to be. When you log on to Facebook, you have the opportunity to see up to 1,500 posts per visit. How does Facebook choose which posts you see? Promotion.
  3. Limitless Followers. A personal page only allows up to 5,000 friends. A business page on the other hand allows you to continue your growth until you’ve added everyone and their mothers.
  4. Scheduling. Social media is a full time job. I know this because it is my full time job. One of the greatest things about a business page, is the ability to schedule. Maybe Monday’s are slow days for you. Get all your posts set up on Monday and just let them post themselves throughout the week! (You can even boost while scheduling!)
  5. Credibility. This last one has nothing to do with a rule that Facebook set up. Its just plain and simple knowledge. By setting up a business page for your business you are telling people you are legit. It shows consumers that you know what you are doing; therefore you must know what you are doing with the product you are selling.

 

If your fear is that you are losing followers by starting from scratch, it’s not true! Just because someone is a friend with you on Facebook does not make him or her a perfect brand ambassador for you. My Top 3 Beaches to Visit in Florida

Living in Florida, you have your choice of beaches to visit. Truth be told, I haven’t always been a beach person. I grew up in New York (the state, not the city) and spent my summers in the icy cold waters of Lake Ontario. My grandparents had their home there and we enjoyed many family picnics alternating between two extremes: freezing to death and sweating to death. Summer in New York is slightly unpredictable. But back to why I’m not a beach person….sand. I hate it. Remember those family photos where every kid is happy and smiling after playing in the sun and the sand all day? Well, this is my photo…

Yes, I’m the one freaking out.  There was probably sand in my underwear or a bug on my hand. Notice that all my cousins have happily changed their clothes and are lined up by height for the annual cousin photo. I just wanted to take a shower.

 

Fast forward thirty years, and I find myself living on Florida’s gulf coast with some of the worlds best beaches to visit. I am trying to overcome my aversion to sand by visiting as many of these as possible. Below are some of my favorites, and why I love them.

 

1) St Pete Beach

  • Beach Bars: There is nothing better than sitting on the beach, frosty beverage in hand, and enjoying the view.

  • Crowds: Sometimes I’m in the mood to socialize and St. Pete Beach always has a great mix of people, from college kids on spring break to families.

  • Soft Sand: This is not the grainy, rocky sand of my youth. This sand is like “spun sugar”.

2) Fort De Soto Park

  • Kayaking/Canoeing: Rent by the hour or by the day and paddle your way through lush mangroves. Spot dolphins, rays, pelicans, herons, egrets, plovers and more.

  • Nature Trails: There are over 7 miles of trails to ride, skate or jog.

  • Beauty: Fort De Soto has 3 miles of white, sandy beaches and no hotels in sight. If you are looking for peaceful beauty, this is one of the most relaxing beaches with the clearest water.

3) Indian Rocks Beach

  • Proximity: I live about a mile away, proximity is everything.

  • Sunsets: Stunningly beautiful sunset walks on the beach.

  • Best of Both Worlds: If you want the feel of quiet, peaceful beach but don’t feel like hauling coolers and half your kitchen with you, this is the place. There are many restaurants all with that casual, beachy feel but they are across the street from the beach so you are able to enjoy a peaceful visit.

I still don’t like sand. It’s in my car, my yard, my house. Once it’s on you, you can’t get it off. I have learned that baby wipes are great to have on hand and that spray sunscreen is one of the greatest inventions mankind has seen. I DO love everything about living in Florida, the beaches I get to visit and the many outdoor activities that my family and I can enjoy here year-round.

Jennifer McPherson: Executive Assistant. Whip Cracker. Hero.

Where do we begin? We know. That’s cliché. But seriously, this woman does it all.

Only 4 months in, Jennifer has whipped this office into shape. We all know agencies  are creative hot messes, but with her on our team, now we are just creative and well hot. It is Florida after all.

CEA’s Employee of the Month award goes to an employee who has gone above and beyond to see the company grow, to the person who creates a work environment that is inviting and enjoyable and to someone who powers through the hard times

Live and Learn: 5 Things I’ve Learned from Working in Advertising

 

Graduation season is upon us. This blog is dedicated to those looking to land their first real job in the exciting world of advertising.

 

I landed my first “big girl job” at a large corporation at age 24 working in the marketing department. I went through four years of schooling yet nothing prepared me for the world of advertising like the experience itself.  Here are 5 lessons I learned that you should learn now.

 

Warning- What you are about to read is the cold hard truth.

 

1. Education is power.

If you think that just because you graduated you never have to take another class, read another book, or learn a new skill, you are mistaken. Things change quickly in this industry and if you don’t stay on top of these trends, you will be run over.

 

2. Work hard play hard.

It’s easy to find yourself staying late, coming in early, or skipping lunch to finish the work you are accountable for. What I learned the hard way was this brings a quicker burn out rate and higher stress level. No matter how busy you are, remember to take the time to balance your personal life and squeeze in things you love.

 

3. When you work in marketing, everyone thinks they can do your job better than you can.

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, thinks they have a better way to say something, a more creative approach, or a better strategy than you. Remind yourself that you are educated, you keep up on the latest trends and you have experience to know what works and what doesn’t.

 

4. As my former manager used to tell me, “we aren’t saving babies.”

You need tough skin to work in this industry. Do not let every nasty email, bad result, spelling error, or missed email eat you alive. Shake it off and promise yourself to do better the next time.

 

5. When you feel like giving up, remember why you started.

Yes it’s a tough job at times, but it’s also a job that allows you to be creative, think outside of the box, stay on top of trends and challenge yourself daily. You don’t know what you are capable of until you are challenged.

 

Congrats to all the grads and welcome to this crazy, exciting, challenging, and creative world of advertising.
